15. 2783 Sunday Shopping In Canada.

This paper looks at the social, economic and, in particular, the legal aspects of Sunday retail shopping. Sunday shopping has been a controversial subject across Canada. Each province has dealt with it slightly differently. These differences will be highlighted and the possible reasons behind them. Many interest groups from the buying public, retailers, the church and the government have strong views on Sunday shopping. These views will also be discussed in terms of the decisions made by the courts. 5 pgs. 14 f/c. 5b.

17. 2854 Canada: Concentration of Political Influence.

It appears to be quite certain that the concentration of financial wealth in Canada is leading to a concentration of political influence. One disturbing development in our democracy is that the political state is starting to be governed more by the market than by the sentiments of the voters - even though the market is supposed to be a representation of the peoples' preferences. But in the end, the state has become a symbolic representation of the vested economic interests of one small, but powerful constituency of society. 5 pgs. 10 f/c. 2b.

18. 3741 The Social Repercussions of Free Trade in Canada: a Critical Approach.

Free trade with the United States has not been of net benefit to Canadians. This paper points to how harder aspects of the adjustment to free trade in Canada have been dismissed as mere 'growing pains' of adjustment. It is emphasized that the 1980s Debate did not really grapple with possible detrimental effects as these were pushed to the background in order to ratify a most questionable agreement. 14 pgs. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

19. 3859 Planning for a Sustainable Level of Tourism Development: A Critical Analysis of Planning Processes with Respect to Tourism in the Town of St. Jacob's, Ontario.

This paper will present a critical analysis of a case study concerning the tourism planning process of one such local/regional tourist destination: St. Jacobs, Ontario. It will be argued that the planning process in St. Jacobs represents almost a textbook example of what not to do in terms of community planning for a local/regional tourist industry. After a general discussion of the players, the issues, and the processes in the St. Jacobs case, some of the more probable implications of the history of the planning process in the town will be outlined. Finally, an alternative model, that addresses the deficiencies of the given planning process in St. Jacobs, will be presented. 12 pgs. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

20. 3861 Globalization and the Economy: An Analysis of the TVO/Munk Centre for International Studies Roundtable.

The October 18th roundtable on TVO, broadcast from the Munk Centre for International Studies, presented a discussion of "globalization" that was at times both illuminating and confusing. Given the wide-ranging nature of the debate, and the interconnectedness of almost every element under discussion, it is difficult to narrow the debate down into three main arguments. However, perhaps the three most striking arguments were: 1) What is globalization? 2) Self-determination; and 3) Social Justice. This essay will examine each of these arguments in turn, moving back and forth between the comments of the participants in the discussion and analyses in the scholarly literature on the subject. These comments and scholarly references will themselves be subjected to analysis in order to construct an argument as to which of the points-of-view on the topics under debate is most plausible. 10 pgs. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

It then analyses the changes that Quebec nationalism underwent during the 'Quiet Revolution' of the 1960s. 10 pgs. Bibliography lists 12 sources.
