21569 The Suffering in Okinawa Extends Past the Battle of World War II Unfortunately it took a rape and an issue with nuclear bullets that were accidentally fired near Okinawa that inspired a typical American cover-up to raise heightened awareness of a problem that has existed for decades (Gertz, p.1). However, many still do not know about the suffering endured by the Okinawan people during and following the Battle of Okinawa. And, many more than that are oblivious to the atrocities they have endured since the war. It has become fashionable in the United States to glorify Pearl Harbor as has been evidenced through the making of the movie Pearl Harbor. The attack of Pearl Harbor stands in infamy as one of the bleakest days in American history. The majority of American sympathy in regards to World War II and the Japanese concerns the imprisonment of Asian-Americans into concentration camps in California. It is frequently looked upon in America as an ?unfortunate but necessary evil? that took place during the war. However, the atrocities heaped upon the Okinawan people, atrocities that received so little attention stand far above what happened in California. The Okinawan people suffered great casualties during the Battle of Okinawa, suffered a most unfortunate plight immediately after the invasion consisting of suicide and murder, and have suffered the wrath of oppression for the 50 plus years since.

It would be impossible to lump the Korean culture together and combine the cultures of North and South Korea and speak of them as though they were one. Differences in politics and basic economic and military beliefs keep these two countries apart culturally as well, which is probably one of the biggest obstacles in unifying Korea. Below is an outline of the culture, political and economic climate, education, daily life, and challenges of the South Korean people.

21773 Religion in Southeast Asia A large part of the religious development in Southeast Asia can be contributed to confrontations with these external and internal factors.
