66. 21131 Kansas-Nebraska Act

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was one in a series of measures designed to keep the country from splitting apart, one in a series of attempts to keep the nation from being irrevocably torn by slavery. As such, it was a failure. And yet, arguably this acts (like the legislative compromises that came before it, did do some good. While they obviously failed to silence the guns at Fort Sumter, they at least in some measure laid the groundwork for a spirit of compromise. After the slaughters at Bull Run and Manassas, at Gettysburg and Shiloh and Antietam, the nation could look back beyond the horror and the blood and the bodies gone forever underground to a time when compromise had seemed both good and possible to a time when ? the horror of slavery torn out by the horror of war ? it once again seemed possible and honourable and good, as McPherson (2003) suggests.

67. 21228 Sojourner Truth

Certainly, slavery would have ended in the United States and American women would finally have earned the suffrage, but these things might not have come about so quickly without Sojourner Truth?s work. The fact that so few people in any generation speak out and act on principle in order to change the world allows those that do to have enormous power ? for either good or evil. American history was shaped by Sojourner Truth, who recognized that history is the collection of individual stories, personal courage, and private revolutions.

68. 21359 Johnson and Reconstruction

Many in Congress objected to the anti-Populist stance taken by Andrew Johnson. But many more were angered by his attempts to reduce the role of the Congress not only in terms of the shape of Reconstruction (which might have been tolerated) but in terms of the long-term balance of power amongst the branches of government. Johnson position was weakened by the Congressional election of 1866, which brought more Populists to Washington. The fact that he was acquitted by a single vote in his impeachment trial suggests how very unpopular his policies were. Those in Congress ? as well as the citizens who had sent them there ? recognized in Johnson?s emphasis of the centrality of the executive branch an especially powerful anti-Populist weapon ? one that has been used time and time again in the intervening century and a half.

69. 21446 Lincoln?s Emancipation Proclamation: Influences and Motives

This paper is an extended analysis of the motives and influences that had a direct effect upon President Lincoln's decision to draft the Emancipation Proclamation. The argument rejects the notion that the decision was fuelled by a moral distaste for slavery with the intent at securing freedom for all. Instead, the decision is analyzed as an attempt to undermine the South, improve foreign diplomatic relations, and appease Northern abolitionists
